Virtues, description, and recitation method of AAMAL AT THE SEVENTH COLUMN (SUTOON) as recorded in Shia traditions.

بِسْمِ اللّهِ وَ بِاللَهِ

Be it known to you that the narrations carrying the merits of the seventh column in Masjid al-Kufah are numerous. For instance, al-Kulayni has reported through an authoritative chain of authority that Imam 'Ali Amir al-Mu'minin ('a) used to offer prayers next to the seventh column and the distance between him and this column was so close that one could hardly pass from there. According to another validly reported narration, each night sixty thousand angels descend from the heavens to offer prayer at the seventh column and none of them returns until the Resurrection Day. According to another validly reported tradition, Imam al- Sadiq ('a) has said, "The seventh column is the standing- place of Prophet Abraham ('a)." In his book of al-Kafi, Shaykh al-Kulayni has also narrated that Abu-lsma'il al-Sarraj reported that Mu'awiyah ibn Wahab took him from the arm to the seventh column and said that Abu-Hamzah al-Thumali had taken him from the arm to this seventh column and said that al-Asbagh ibn Nubatah had taken him from the arm to this seventh column and said, "This is the place where Imam 'Ali Amir al-Mu'minin ('a) used to be. Imam al-Hasan ('a) used to offer prayers at the fifth column, but when Imam 'Ali ('a) would be absent, al-Hasan ('a) would take his place at the seventh column, which is at bab kindah (the Gate of Kindah)." In conclusion, the narrations reporting the merits of the seventh column at Masjid al-Kufah are numerous; but because my course in this book is to sum up as much as possible, l will mention no more.

وَ عَلَى مِلَّةٍ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ

In the Name of Allah (I begin), in Allah (I trust), and the

صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ ألِهِ

course of Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him and his

وَ لَا اِلْهَ اِلَّا اللهُ

Household, (l follow). There is no god but Allah. Muhammad

مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُوْلَ اللَهِ

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى اَبِيْنَا اَدَمَ وَ أمّنَا حَوَّاءَ

is Allah's messenger. Peace be upon our father Adam and

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى هَابِيْلَ الْمَقْتُوْلِ ظُلْمًا وَ عُدْوَانًا

our mother Eve. Peace be upon Abel who was killed wrongly

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى مَوَاهِبِ اللهِ وَ رِضْوَانِهِ

and aggressively, because he was envied for Allah's favors

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلى شَيْتٍ [شَيْثَ] صَفْوَةِ اللهِ

and pleasure. Peace be upon Sheeth, the select of Allah, the

الْمُخْتَارِ الْآَمِيْنِ

chosen and trustee, and upon the veracious, select ones

وَ عَلَى الصَّفْوَةِ الصَادِقِيْنَ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِهِ الطَّيِّبِيْنَ

اَوَّلِهِمْ وَ أَخِرِهِمْ

from his immaculate progeny, from the first to the last.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى اِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَ اِسْمَاعِيْلَ

Peace be upon Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, and Jacob, and

وَ اِسْحَاقَ وَ يَعْقُّوْبَ

وَ عَلَى ذُرَّيَّتِهِمُ الْمُخْتَارِيْنَ

upon their chosen descendants. Peace be upon Moses the

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلْى مُؤْسى كَلِيْمِ اللهِ

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى عِيْسْى رُوْحِ اللهِ

spoken by Allah. Peace be upon Jesus the spirit of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ خَاتَمِ النَّبِيِّيْنَ

Peace be upon Muhammad the son of 'Abdullah, the seal of

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ ذُرِّيَّتِهِ الطَّيِّبِيْنَ

the Prophets. Peace be upon the Commander of the Faithful

وَ رَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَ بَرَكَاتُهُ

and upon his immaculate progeny. Allah's mercy and

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْاَوْلِيْنَ

blessings be upon them. Peace be upon you among the

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْأَخِرِيْنَ

ancient generations. Peace be upon you among the coming

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى فَاطِمَةَ الزَّهْرَاءِ

generations. Peace be upon Fatimah al-Zahra' (the Luminous

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى الْاَئِمَّةِ الْهَادِيْنَ

Lady). Peace be upon the guiding Imams: the witnesses of

شُهَدَاءِ اللهِ عَلَى خَلْقِهِ

Allah upon His created beings. Peace be upon the

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى الرَّقِيْبِ الشَّاهِدِ عَلَى الْأُمَمِ للهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ

Supervisor the witness on the nations for Allah the Lord of

اَللَّهُمَّ اِنْ كُنْتُ قَدْ عَصَيْثُكَ

فَاِنَّيْ

the worlds.

قَدْ اَطَعْثُكَ فِي الْاِيْمَانِ مِنَّيْ بِكَ

O Allah, if I have disobeyed you, I have also obeyed you in my

مَنّا مِنْكَ عَلىَّ ل

belief in You. This is out of Your favoring upon me, not a

لا مَنَّا مِنَّيْ [بِهِ] عَلِيْكَ

وَ اَطَعْثُكَ فِيْ آَحَبّ الْاَشيَاءِ لَكَ [الَيْكَ]

favor that I do to You. I have also obeyed You in the things

لَمْ أَتَّخِذْ لَكَ وَلَدًا

that You most like: I have not claimed that You have child

وَ لَمْ اَدْعُ لَكَ شَرِيْكًا

and I have not associated any one with You. Yet, l have

وَ قَدْ عَصَيْتُكَ فِي اَشْيَآءَ كَثِيْرَةٍ

disobeyed You in many things, on account of neither

عَلَى غَيْرِ وَجْهِ الْمُكَابَرَةِ لَكَ

وَ لَا الْخُرُوْجِ عَنْ [مِنْ] عُبُوْدِيَّتِكَ

وَ لَا الْجُحْوْدِ لِرُبُوْبِيَّتِكَ

defiance, nor mutiny against my servitude to You, nor denial

وَ لكِنِ اتَّبَعْتُ هَوَايَ

of Your Godhead; rather, I only followed my lusts, and Satan

وَ اَزَلَّنِي الشَّيْطَانُ بَعْدَ الْحُجَةِ عَلَيَّ وَ الْبَيَانِ

caused me to slip although You have had clear argument against me. Thus, if You chastise me, then it is on account of

فَاِنْ تُعَذَّبْنِيْ فَبِذُنُوْبِيْ غَيْرَ ظَالِمِ لِيْ

my sins and You are never unjust to me. And if You pardon

وَ اِنْ تَغْفُ عَنَّيْ وَ تَرْحَمْنِيْ

me and have mercy upon me, then this is out of Your

فبِجُوْدِكَ وَ كَرَمِكَ يَا كَرِيْمُ

magnanimity and generosity, O All-generous. O Allah, nothing

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ ذُنُوْبِيْ لَمْ يَبْقَ لَهَا اِلَّا رَجَآءُ عَفْوِكَ

can stand for my sins except my hope in Your pardon,

وَ قَدْ قَدَّمْتُ اُلَةَ الْحِرْمَانِ

although I have done. things due to which I deserve

فَاَنَا اَسْاَلُكَ اللَّهُمَّ مَا لَا اَسْتَوْجِبُهُ

deprivation of Your pardon. Therefore, I beseech You, O Allah,

وَ اَطلُبُ مِنْكَ مَا لَا اَسْتَجِقُهُ

for that which I do not deserve and I seek from You that

اَللَّهُمَ اِنْ تُعَذَّبْنِي فَبِذُنُوْبِي وَ لَمْ تَظْلِمْنِن شَيْئًا

which I do not merit. O Allah, if you chastise me, then this will

وَ اِنْ تَغْفِرْ لِي فَخَيْرُ رَاحِمِ اَنْتَ يَا سَيِّدِيْ.

be on account of my sins and You shall never be unjust to

اَللَّهُمَّ اَنْتَ اَنْتَ وَ اَنَا اَنَا

me. But if You forgive me, then You are already the best of all

آَنْتَ الْعَوَادُ بِالْمَغْفِرَةِ

those who show mercy, O my Master. O Allah, You are what

وَ اَنَا الْعَوَادُ بِالذَّنُوْبِ

You are and l am what | am: You are always returning with

وَ أَنْتَ الْمُتَفَضَّلُ بِالْحِلْمِ

forgiveness and I always return with sinning. You always

وَ آَنَا الْعَوَّادُ بِالْجَهْلِ

confer with forbearance and I always return with impatience.

اَللَّهُمَّ فَإِنَّيْ آسآلُكَ يَا كَنْزَ الضُّعَفَاءِ

O Allah, I do beseech You, O treasure of the weak, O He in

يَا عَظِيْمَ الرَّجَاءِ

يَا مُنْقِذَ الْغَرْقِى

يَا مُنْجِيَ الْهَلْكَى

Whom great hope is put, O rescuer of the drowned, O savior

يَا مُمِيْتَ الاَحِيَاءِ

of those about to perish, O He Who causes the alive to die, 0

يَا مُخْيِيَ الْمَوْثِى

اَنْتَ اللهُ لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ

He Who causes the dead to live again! You are Allah; there is

أَنْتَ الَّذِيْ سَجَدَ لَكَ شُعَاعُ الشَّمْسِ

no god but You. It is You before Whom has prostrated the ray

وَ دَوِيُّ الْمَآءِ

of the sun, the sound of water, the rustling of trees, and the

وَ حَفِيْفُ الشَّجَرِ

وَ نُوْرُ القَمَرِ

moonlight, the murk of night, the light of daytime, and the

وَ ظُلْمَةُ اللَّيْل

flapping of birds. I thus beseech You, O All-great, in the name

وَ ضَوْءُ النَّهَارِ

وَ خَفَقَانُ الطِّيْرِ

of the duty of Muhammad and his veracious Household

فَاسْاَلُكَ اللَّهُمَّ يَا عَظِيْمُ

بِحَقَّكَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ الِهِ الصَّادِقِيْنَ

towards You, in the name of Your duty towards Muhammad

وَ بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ الِهِ الصَّادِقِيْنَ عَلَيْكَ

and his veracious Household, in the name of the duty of 'Ali

وَ بِحَقَّكَ عَلْى عَلِيَّ

towards You, in the name of Your duty towards 'Ali, in the

وَ بِحَقَّ عَلِيٌّ عَلَيْكَ

name of the duty of Fatimah towards You, in the name of

وَ بِحَقَّكَ عَلَى فَاطِمَةَ

Your duty towards Fatimah, in the name of the duty of al-

وَ بِحَقُّ فَاطِمَةَ عَلَيْكَ،

Hasan towards You, in the name of Your duty towards al-

وَ بِحَقَّكَ عَلَى الْحَسَنِ

Hasan, in the name of the duty of al-Husayn towards You,

وَ بِحَقَّ الْحَسَنِ عَلَيْكَ

and in the name of Your duty towards al-Husayn. Verily, Your

وَ بِحَقُّكَ عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ

duty towards them is one of the greatest blessings that You

وَ بِحَقُّ الْحُسَيْنِ عَلَيْكَ

conferred upon them. And (l beseech You) in the name of the

وَ بِالشَّأْنِ الَّذِيْ لَكَ عِنْدَهُمْ

position that You enjoy with them and in the name of the

وَ بِالشَّأْنِ الَّذِي لَهُمْ عِنْدَكَ

position that they enjoy with You to (please) bless them, O

صَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ يَا رَبِّ صَلَاةً دَآئِمَةً مُنتَهَى رِضَاكَ

Lord, with blessings that are as endless until they attain Your

وَ اغْفِرْ لِيْ بِهِمُ الذُّنُوْبَ الَتِيْ بَيْنِيْ وَ بَيْنَكَ

pleasure, to forgive me, in their names, the sins that l committed concerning my duties towards You, to make Your

وَ أَرْضِ عَنَّيْ خَلْقَكَ

creatures to be satisfied with me, to complete Your favors

وَ اثْمِمْ عَلَيَّ نِعْمَتَكَ

upon me in the same way as You had completed them upon

كَمَا أَثْمَمْتَهَا عَلَى اَبَآئِيْ مِنْ قَبْلُ

my forefathers, not to cause any of Your creatures to have

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ لِاَحَدٍ مِنَ الْمَخْلُوْقِيْنَ عَلَيَّ فِيْهَا امْتِنَانًا

any role in these favors, to confer upon me with graces in the

وَ امْنُنْ عَلَيَّ كَمَا مَنَنْتَ عَلَى أَبَآئِيْ مِنْ قَبْلُ

same way as You had already done with my forefathers, 0

يَا كَهُيقَصَ

kaf-ha'-ya'-'ayn-sad. O Allah, in the same way as You have

اَللَّهُمّ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ ألِهِ

poured blessings upon Muhammad and his Household,

فَاسْتَجِبْ لِي دُعَآئِي فِيْمَا سَاَلْتُ

(please) respond to my entreaty as regards that which I have asked from You, O All-generous! O All-generous! O AIl-

يَا كَرِيْمُ يَا كَرِيْمُ يَا كَرِيْمُ.

generous!

يَا مَنْ يَقْدِرُ عَلَى حَوَائِجِ السَّائِلِيْنَ

O He Who has full power over settling the requests of the

وَ يَعَلَمُ مَا فِيْ ضَمِيْرِ الصَّامِتِيْنَ

beseechers and Who knows what is hidden in the inner

يَا مَنْ لَا يَحتَاجُ إِلَى التَفْسِيْرِ

selves of the silent ones. O He Who does not require

يَا مَنْ يَعْلَمُ خَآئِنَةَ الْاَعْيُنِ وَ مَا تُخْفِيْ الصُدُوْرُ

explanation. O He Who knows the stealthy looks and that

يَا مَنْ اَنْزَلَ الْعَذَابَ عَلَى قَوْمِ يُوْنُسَ

which the breasts conceal. O He Who decided chastisement

وَ هُوَ يُرِيْدُ أَنْ يُعَذَّبَهُمْ

to befall the people of (Prophet) Jonah and as He decided to

فَدَعَوْهُ وَ تَضَرَّعُوْا اِلَيْهِ

chastise them, they prayed Him and besought Him; so, He

فَكَشَفَ عَنْهُمُ الْعَذَابَ وَ مَتَّعَهُمْ إِلَى جِيْنٍ

removed from them the chastisement and He gave them

قَدْ تَرْى مَكَانِيْ

provision until a time. You do see where l am, You do hear

وَ تَسْمَعُ دُعَائِيْ

my prayer, You do know what I conceal, what I declare, and in

وَ تَعَلَمُ سِرِّيْ وَ عَلَانِيَتِيْ وَ حَالِيْ

what situation I am: (please) send blessings upon

صَلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ الِ مُحَمَّدٍ

Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, and relieve

وَ اكْفِنِي مَا اَهَمَّنِيْ

me from all that which has aggrieved me from the affairs of

مِنْ اَمْرِ دِيْنِيْ وَ دُنْيَايَ وَ اخِرَتِيْ.

my religion, my worldly life, and my Next Life.

يَا سَيِّدِيْ

O my Master.

يَا رَبِّ آَسْاَلَكَ بَرَكَةَ هَذَا الْمَوْضِع

O my Lord, I pray You to grant me the blessing of this place

وَ بَرَكَةَ اَهْلِهِ

and the blessing of its people. And l pray You to grant me

وَ آَسْاَلَكَ آَنْ تَرْزُقَنِيْ مِنْ رِزْقِكَ

sustenance from Your sustenance; sustenance that is legal

رِزْقَا حَلَالَا طَيِّبًا

نَسُوْقَهُ اِلَيَّ بِحَوْلِكَ وَ قَوَّتِكَ

and pleasant, and that You bring it to me by Your might and

وَ اَنَا خَائِضٌ فِيْ عَافِيَةٍ

power, while l experience good health, O most merciful of all

يَآ أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ.

those who show mercy. O He through whom the knots of detested things are untied!

اَللَّهُمَّ يَا مَنْ تُحَلِّ بِهِ عُقَدُ الْمَكَارِهِ

O He through whom the cutting edge of hardships is blunted!

اَللَّهُمَّ اِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ وَ لَا اعْلَمْ

O Allah, You verily know while I do not, You have power (over

وَ تَقْدِرُ وَ لَا اَقْدِرُ

all things) while I do not, and You are the Knower of all

وَ اَنْتَ عَلَامُ الْغُيُوْبِ

unseen things. (Please) send blessings upon Muhammad

صَلَّ اللَّهُمَّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ ألِ مُحَمَّدٍ

and the Household of Muhammad, forgive me, have mercy

وَ اغْفِزْ لِيْ وَ ازحَمْنِيْ

upon me, overlook my sins, and confer upon me with that which is befitting You, O most merciful of all those who show mercy. Be it known to you that the narrations carrying the merits of the seventh column in Masjid alkufah are numerous. For instance, alkulayni has reported through an authoritative chain of authority that Imam 'Ali Amir alMu'minin ('a) used to ofter prayers next to the seventh column and the distance between him and this column was so close that one could hardly pass from there. يَا أَزْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ .
