DUA JAWSHAN AL KABIR
The Supplication of the Major Chain-Armor.
Shaykh al-Kaf'ami has written this supplication in his both
books of al-Balad al-Amin and al-Misbah. It is narrated from
Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al'Abidin on the authority of his
father on the authority of his grandfather on the authority of
the Holy Prophet - peace be upon them all. In this
connection, it is narrated that Archangel Gabriel carried this
supplication to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) during one of his
campaigns while he (i.e. the Holy Prophet) was putting on
such a heavy armor that hurt him. The archangel said,
"Muhammad, your Lord sends His greetings to you, ordering
you to take off this armor and say this supplication, for it will
be security for your people and you."
The merits of uttering this supplication are too many to be
mentioned here. Yet, among these merits is that if one writes
down this supplication on his coffin, Almighty Allah will
disdain to chastise him with Hellfire, if one says it on the first
of the holy month of Ramadan, Almighty Allah will lead him
to be awarded the rewards of Laylat al-Qadr (the Grand
Night) and will create seventy thousand angels whose
mission is to glorify Almighty Allah while the reward of that
glorification will be recorded for that person, if one says the
supplication three times in Ramadan, Almighty Allah will
save his body from experiencing Hellfire, will incumbently
allow him to enter Paradise, will order two angels to ward off
that person from committing acts of disobedience to Him,
and will be under the shelter of Almighty Allah throughout his
lifetime. Finally, the narration reads that Imam al-Husayn
(a.s.) said, "My father, Ali ibn Abi-Talib, has instructed me to
memorize and respect this supplication, to write it down on
my coffin, and to teach it to my family members and urge
them to say it frequently. The supplication, however, consists
of one thousand sacred Names (of Almighty Allah) one of
which being the Greatest Name (alism al-A'zam).
In conclusion, the following two matters are inferred:
First: it is recommended to write Dua al-Jawshan al-Kabir on
coffins. eferring to this recommended act, 'Allamah Bahr
al'Ulum has composed in his book of al-Durrah the following
two poetic verses:
وَسُنَّ اَنْ يُكْتَبَ بِالْاَكْفَانِ
شَهَادَةُ الْإِسْلَامِ وَالْاِيْمَانِ
وَهَكَذَا كِتَابَةُ الْقُرْانِ
وَالْجَوْشَنُ الْمَنْعُوْنُ بِالْاَمَانِ
Second: It is recommended to say this supplication on the
first day of Ramadan.
Although no narration has confirmed the recommendation of
saying the supplication on the Grand (al-Qadr) Nights in
particular, 'Allamah al-Majlisi, in his book of Zad al-Ma'ad, has
asserted that some narrations mentioned the
recommendation of saying it at the three nights of al-Qadr. In
fact, al-Majlisi's word is sufficient proof in this respect.
To sum it up, Dua al-Jawshan al-Kabir comprises one
hundred chapters each of which consists of ten Names of
Almighty Allah. At the end of each chapter, one should repeat
the following statement:
سُنْحَانَكَ يَا لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ
اَلْغَوْثَ الْغَوث الْغَو
خَلَضْنَا مِنَ النَّارِ يَا رَبَّ
However, al-Kaf'ami, in al-Balad al-Amin, has recommended
that each chapter of the supplication should be commenced
with Basmalah and sealed with the abovementioned
statement, yet in the following form:
سُبْحَانَكَ يَا لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ
اَلْغَوْثَ اَلْغَوْثَ الْغَوْثَ
صَلَّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَالِهِ
وَ خَلَّضنَا مِنَ النَّارِ يَا رَبَّ
يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
يَآ أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ
The Dua is as follows:
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمْنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
DUA JAWSHAN AL-KABIR
Dua ya Silaha Kuu ya Kujikinga.
Shaykh al-Kaf'ami ameandika dua hii katika vitabu vyake viwili, al-Balad al-Amin na al-Misbah. Imepokewa kutoka kwa Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al-'Abidin, kwa mamlaka ya baba yake, kwa mamlaka ya babu yake, kwa mamlaka ya Mtukufu Mtume - amani iwe juu yao wote. Katika muktadha huu, imepokewa kwamba Malaika Mkuu Jibril alimpelekea dua hii Mtukufu Mtume (s.a.w.a.) wakati wa mojawapo ya kampeni zake, huku Mtukufu Mtume akiwa amevaa silaha nzito iliyokuwa ikimuumiza. Malaika Mkuu alisema, "Ewe Muhammad, Mola wako anakutumia salamu Zake, akikuamuru uivue silaha hii na useme dua hii, kwani itakuwa kinga kwako na kwa umati wako."
Fadhila za kusoma dua hii ni nyingi mno kiasi cha kutoweza kutajwa hapa. Hata hivyo, miongoni mwa fadhila hizi ni kwamba, endapo mtu ataiandika dua hii kwenye sanda yake, Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu atakataa kumuadhibu kwa Moto wa Jahannamu, endapo mtu ataisoma siku ya kwanza ya mwezi mtukufu wa Ramadhani, Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu atamwezesha kupata thawabu za Laylat al-Qadr (Usiku Mkuu) na atawaumba malaika sabini elfu ambao jukumu lao ni kumtukuza Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu, huku thawabu za utukuzaji huo zikiandikwa kwa ajili ya mtu huyo, endapo mtu ataisoma dua hii mara tatu katika mwezi wa Ramadhani, Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu ataokoa mwili wake kutokana na kuupitia Moto wa Jahannamu, atamruhusu kuingia Peponi kwa lazima, ataamuru malaika wawili kumlinda mtu huyo asifanye matendo ya kumuasi Yeye, na atakuwa chini ya ulinzi wa Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu maisha yake yote. Mwisho, simulizi inasema kwamba Imam al-Husayn (a.s.) alisema, "Baba yangu, Ali ibn Abi-Talib, amenielekeza kuhifadhi na kuiheshimu dua hii, kuiandika kwenye sanda yangu, na kuwafundisha wanafamilia wangu na kuwahimiza waiisome mara kwa mara. Dua hii, hata hivyo, inajumuisha Majina elfu moja matakatifu (ya Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu) mojawapo likiwa Jina Kuu Kabisa (al-Ism al-A'zam)."

Ingawa hakuna simulizi iliyothibitisha mapendekezo ya kusema dua hii katika Nyusiku Kuu (za al-Qadr) hasa, 'Allamah al-Majlisi, katika kitabu chake cha Zad al-Ma'ad, amethibitisha kuwa baadhi ya simulizi zilitaja mapendekezo ya kuisoma katika nyusiku tatu za al-Qadr. Kwa kweli, maneno ya al-Majlisi yanatosha kuwa ushahidi katika suala hili.
Kwa ufupi, Dua al-Jawshan al-Kabir inajumuisha sura mia moja, ambapo kila sura ina Majina kumi ya Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu. Mwishoni mwa kila sura, mtu anapaswa kurudia kauli ifuatayo:

Hata hivyo, al-Kaf'ami, katika al-Balad al-Amin, amependekeza kwamba kila sura ya dua hii ianzishwe kwa Basmalah na kumalizwa kwa kauli iliyotajwa hapo juu, lakini katika mfumo ufuatao:
سُبْحَانَكَ يَا لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ
اَلْغَوْثَ اَلْغَوْثَ الْغَوْثَ
صَلَّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَالِهِ
وَ خَلِّصْنَا مِنَ النَّارِ يَا رَبَّ
يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
يَآ أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ
Dua hiyo ni kama ifuatavyo:
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
(1) O Allah, verily I beseech You in Your name: O Allah, O All-
beneficent, O All-merciful, O Most Generous, O Self-
Subsisting, O Greatest, O Eternal, O All-knowing, O
Forbearing, O Allwise. Glory be to You! There is no god but
You! [l beseech you for] relief, relief, relief. Protect us from
the Fire, O Lord!
Ee Mwenyezi Mungu, hakika mimi nakuomba kwa jina Lako: Ee Allah, Ee Mwingi wa Rehema, Ee Mwenye Kurehemu, Ee Mkarimu mno, Ee Mwenye Kusimama kwa Nafsi Yake, Ee Mkuu mno, Ee wa Milele, Ee Mjuzi wa yote, Ee Mpole, Ee Mwenye Hikima mno. Utukufu ni Wako! Hapana mungu ila Wewe! [Nakuomba] nusura, nusura, nusura. Tuepushe na Moto, Ee Mola wetu!
(2) O Master of masters, O Acceptor of prayers, O Elevator of
rank, O Guardian of good deeds, O Forgiver of evil deeds, 0
Granter of requests, O Acceptor of repentance, O Hearer ot
sounds, O Knower of attributes, O Repeller of calamities.
Glory be to You! There is no god but You! [l beseech you for]
relief, relief, relief. Protect us from the Fire, O Lord!
Ee Bwana wa mabwana, Ee Mwenye Kukubali dua, Ee Mwenye Kuinua vyeo, Ee Mlinzi wa mema, Ee Mwenye Kusamehe maovu, Ee Mwenye Kukidhi haja, Ee Mwenye Kukubali toba, Ee Mwenye Kusikia sauti, Ee Mjuzi wa sifa, Ee Mwenye Kuzuwia mabalaa. (3) O Best of forgivers, O Best of deciders, O Best of helpers,

Yā man lahu al-ʿizzatu wāljamāla, yā man lahu al-qudratu wālkamāla, yā man lahu al-mulku wāljalāla, yā man huwa al-kabīru al-mutaʿāli, yā munshiya as-saḥābi ath-thaqāli, yā man huwa shadīdu al-miḥāli, yā man huwa sarīʿu al-ḥisābi, yā man huwa shadīdu al-ʿiqābi, yā man ʿindahu ḥusnu ath-thawābi, yā man ʿindahu umu al-kitābi.
(4) O He to Whom is all glory and virtue, O He to Whom is all
might and perfection, O He to Whom is all dominion and
sublimity, O He Who is All-great and All-exalted, O He Who
creates heavy clouds, O He Who is Mighty in prowess, O He
Who is quick to reckon, O He Who metes out the severest
punishment, O He with Whom is the excellent reward, O He
with Whom is the Mother of Books. Glory be to You! There is
no god but You! [l beseech you for] relief, relief, relief. Protect
us from the Fire, O Lord!
Ee Yule Ambaye utukufu wote na fadhila ni Zake, Ee Yule Ambaye nguvu zote na ukamilifu ni Vyake, Ee Yule Ambaye mamlaka yote na utukufu ni Vyake, Ee Yule Ambaye ni Mkuu mno na Aliye Juu mno, Ee Yule Anayeumba mawingu mazito, Ee Yule Aliye na Nguvu thabiti, Ee Yule Aliye Mwepesi wa kuhesabu, Ee Yule Anayeadhibu kwa adhabu kali mno, Ee Yule Ambaye Kwake kuna malipo mema, Ee Yule Ambaye Kwake kuna Mama wa Vitabu. Yā man tawāḍaʿa kullu shayʾin liʿaẓamatihi, yā man astaslama kullu shayʾin liqudhratihi, yā man dhalla kullu shayʾin liʿizzatihi, yā man khaḍaʿa kullu shayʾin lihaybatihi, yā man anqāda kullu shayʾin man khashyatihi, yā man tashaqqaqati al-jibāla min makhāfatihi, yā man qāmati as-samāwātu biāmrihi, yā mani astaqarrati al-ʾaraḍūna biʾidhnihi, yā man yusabbiḥu ar-raʿdu biḥamdihi, yā man lā yaʿtadī ʿalā ahli mamlakatihi.
(6) O He before Whose greatness everything bows, O He
before Whose power everything submits, O He before Whose
might overshadows everything, O He before Whose
awesomeness everything is humbled, O He for fear of Whom
everything yields, O He for trepidation of Whom mountains
burst asunder, O He by Whose command the heavens are
raised, O He by Whose permission the [layers of] earth settle
down, O He Whose glory the thunder proclaims, O He Who is
never cruel to his subjects. Glory be to You! There is no god
but You! [l beseech you for] relief, relief, relief. Protect us
from the Fire, O Lord!
Ee Yule Ambaye mbele ya ukuu Wake kila kitu huinama, Ee Yule Ambaye mbele ya uwezo Wake kila kitu hunyenyekea, Ee Yule Ambaye nguvu Zake hufunika kila kitu, Ee Yule Ambaye mbele ya utisho Wake kila kitu hudhalilika, Ee Yule Ambaye kwa kumwogopa kila kitu kinajisalimisha, Ee Yule Ambaye kwa khofu Yake milima hupasuka, Ee Yule Ambaye kwa amri Yake mbingu zimeinuliwa, Ee Yule Ambaye kwa idhini Yake ardhi imetulia, Ee Yule Ambaye radi inasifu utukufu Wake, Ee Yule Ambaye kamwe hawafanyii dhuluma waja Wake. (7) O Forgiver of sins, O Dispeller of tribulations, O Aim of
hopes, O Giver of abundant gifts, O Bestower of bounties, 0
Provider of creatures, O Decreer of the terms of death, 0
Hearer of complaints, O Resurrector of the creatures, O Freer
of captives. Glory be to You! There is no god but You! [l
beseech you for] relief, relief, relief. Protect us from the Fire,
O Lord!
Ee Msameheji wa dhambi, Ee Mwenye Kuondoa shida, Ee Lengo la matumaini, Ee Mtoaji wa zawadi nyingi, Ee Mtoaji wa neema, Ee Mruzuku wa viumbe, Ee Mpangaji wa muda wa mauti, Ee Msikiaji wa malalamiko, Ee Mfufuzi wa viumbe, Ee Mkombozi wa mateka. Utukufu ni Wako! Hapana mungu ila Wewe! [Nakuomba] nusura, nusura, nusura. Tuepushe na Moto, Ee Mola wetu!
(8) O Lord of praise and thanksgiving, O Lord of pride and
eminence, O Lord of glory and sublimity, O Lord of promise
and fulfillment of promises, O Lord of amnesty and
contentment, O Lord of favoring and gift, O Lord of
Judgement and decree, O Lord of dignity and eternity, O Lord
of magnanimity and liberality, O Lord of boons and amenity.
Glory be to You! There is no god but You! [l beseech you for]
relief, relief, relief. Protect us from the Fire, O Lord!
Ee Mola wa sifa na shukrani, Ee Mola wa fahari na ukuu, Ee Mola wa utukufu na kilele cha juu, Ee Mola wa ahadi na utimilifu wa ahadi, Ee Mola wa msamaha na kuridhika, Ee Mola wa fadhila na zawadi, Ee Mola wa Hukumu na kadari, Ee Mola wa heshima na milele, Ee Mola wa ukarimu na utoaji, Ee Mola wa neema na ustawi. Utukufu ni Wako! Hapana mungu ila Wewe! [Nakuomba] nusura, nusura, nusura. Tuepushe na Moto, Ee Mola wetu!
(9) O Allah, verily I beseech You in Your name: O Preventer of
misfortune, O Repeller of calamities. O Elevating of ranks, 0
Fashioner, O Benefiter, O Hearer, O Gatherer, O Intercessor, 0
Magnanimous, O Increaser. Glory be to You! There is no god
but You! [l beseech you for] relief, relief, relief. Protect us
from the Fire, O Lord!
Ee Mwenyezi Mungu, hakika mimi nakuomba kwa jina Lako: Ee Mzuiaji wa mabalaa, Ee Mwenye Kuzuia majanga, Ee Mwinua vyeo, Ee Mtengenezaji wa sura, Ee Mwenye Kunufaisha, Ee Msikivu, Ee Mkusanyaji, Ee Mwombezi, Ee Mkarimu mno, Ee Mwenye Kuzidisha. Utukufu ni Wako! Hapana mungu ila Wewe! [Nakuomba] nusura, nusura, nusura. Tuepushe na Moto, Ee Mola wetu!
(10) O Fashioner of every fashioned thing, O Creator of every
created thing, O Provider sustenance to every needy thing, 0
Sovereign over all subjects, O Dispeller of every hardship, 0
Comforter of every griever, O Merciful to every sufferer, 0
Helper of everything forsaken, O Concealer of every
blemished thing, O Shelter for every exile. Glory be to You!
There is no god but You! [l beseech you for] relief, relief,
relief. Protect us from the Fire, O Lord!
Ee Mtengenezaji wa kila kilichotengenezwa, Ee Muumba wa kila kilichoumbwa, Ee Mruzuku wa kila chenye uhitaji, Ee Mfalme wa raia wote, Ee Mwenye Kuondoa kila dhiki, Ee Mfariji wa kila mwenye huzuni, Ee Mwenye kurehemu kila mwenye kuteseka, Ee Msaidizi wa kila kilichoachwa, Ee Msitiri wa kila chenye kasoro, Ee Kimbilio la kila mkimbizi. (11) O my means in my hardship, O my source of hope in my
misfortune, O my entertainer in my isolation, O my
companion in my alienation, O my patron in my ease, O my
aide at my agony, O my guide in my perplexity, O my fortune
in my neediness, O my shelter in my helplessness, O my
helper at my fears. Glory be to You! There is no god but You!
[l beseech you for] relief, relief, relief. Protect us from the
Fire, O Lord!
Ee tegemeo langu katika dhiki yangu, Ee chanzo cha matumaini yangu katika msiba wangu, Ee mfariji wangu katika upweke wangu, Ee rafiki langu katika ugeni wangu, Ee mlinzi wangu katika wepesi wangu, Ee msaidizi wangu katika maumivu yangu, Ee kiongozi wangu katika utata wangu, Ee utajiri wangu katika uhitaji wangu, Ee kimbilio langu katika unyonge wangu, Ee msaidizi wangu katika hofu zangu. (12) O Knower of the unseen, O Forgiver of sins, O Concealer
of defects, O Expeller of agonies, O Transformer of the
hearts O Healer of the hearts, O Illuminator of the hearts, 0
Intimate of the hearts, O Dispeller of anxiety, O Liberator from
grief. Glory be to You! There is no god but You! |l beseech
you for] relief, relief, relief. Protect us from the Fire, O Lord!
Ee Mjuzi wa yaliyofichikana, Ee Msameheji wa dhambi, Ee Msitiri wa kasoro, Ee Mwenye Kuondoa maumivu makali, Ee Mpinduaji wa nyoyo, Ee Mponya wa nyoyo, Ee Mtia nuru wa nyoyo, Ee Rafiki wa dhati wa nyoyo, Ee Mwenye Kuondoa wasiwasi, Ee Mkombozi kutoka kwenye huzuni. Utukufu ni Wako! Hapana mungu ila Wewe! [Nakuomba] nusura, nusura, nusura. Tuepushe na Moto, Ee Mola wetu!

Virtuous, O Protector, O Patron, O Guide, O Guarantor, 0
Bestower of ascendancy, O Bestower of blessings, 0
Excuser, O Acceptor of repentance. Glory be to You! There is
no god but You! [l beseech you for] relief, relief, relief. Protect
us from the Fire, O Lord!
Ee Mwenyezi Mungu, hakika mimi nakuomba kwa jina Lako: Ee Mwenye Enzi, Ee Mtukufu, Ee Mlinzi, Ee Msimamizi, Ee Kiongozi, Ee Mdhamini, Ee Mtoaji wa ukuu, Ee Mtoaji wa baraka, Ee Mwenye Kusamehe makosa, Ee Mwenye Kukubali toba. (14) O Guide of the bewildered, O Rescuer of those who
appeal, O Helper of the seekers of help, O Aide of the seekers
of aid, O Shelter of the fearful, O Succorer of the faithful, O
Merciful to the indigent, O Refuge for the disobedient, 0
Forgiver of the sinners, O Responder to the supplicants. Glory
be to You! There is no god but You! [l beseech you for] relief,
relief, relief. Protect us from the Fire, O Lord!

He lovers are proud of Him, O He transgressors have wished
for His forgiveness, O He those who are sure in faith receive
consolation from Him, O He those who trust Him rely on Him.

be acquired by imaginations, O He Whose garb is majesty
and greatness, O He Whose Judgement cannot be reversed
by His slaves, O He Whose alone is the kingdom, O He

not correct the actions of the mischievous, O He Who does
not ruin the good reward of the virtuous, O He Who is not
absent from the mind of the Gnostics, O most Magnanimous
of all those who show magnanimity! Glory be to You! There is

accepts repentance from His slaves, O He Who stands
between man and his heart, O He without Whose permission
intercession has no benefit, O He Who knows well who is
astray from His path, O He Whose order no one can reverse,
O He Whose Judgement no one can revoke, O He Whose
arrangement is obeyed by everything, O He in Whose Right
Hand the heavens shall be rolled up, O He Who sends forth
the winds bearing good news before His mercy! Glory be to

Yā man jaʿala al-ʾarḍa mihādan, yā man jaʿala al-jibāla awtādan, yā man jaʿala ash-shamsa sirājan, yā man jaʿala al-qamara nūran, yā man jaʿala al-layla libāsan, yā man jaʿala an-nahāra maʿāshan, yā man jaʿala an-nawma subānan, yā man jaʿala as-samaʾāʾa binaʾāʾan, yā man jaʿala al-āshyāʾa azwājan, yā man jaʿala an-nāra mirṣādan.

seeking livelihood, O He Who has made sleep a rest, O He
Who has made the sky a canopy, O He Who has created
things in pairs, O He Who has made hell an ambush, barking

provides sustenance to every living being, O Ever-living Who
has not inherited life from any living being, O Ever-living Who
quickens the dead, O Ever-living, O Self-Subsistent, Slumber

the obedience to Whom is salvation for the obedient, O He
Whose door is open to the seekers, O He the path leading to
Whom is clear for the repentant, O He Whose signs are
proofs for the observers, O He Whose Book is advice to the
pious, O He Whose provision is for the obedient and
disobedient alike, O He Whose mercy is close to the good-
doers! Glory be to You! There is no god but You! [l beseech

shelter seekers, O He Who is All-Aware and All-Seeing of his
servants, O He Who is Powerful over everything! Glory be to

wishes, O He Who dishonors whomever He wishes, O He
Who fashions in the womb as He wishes, O He Who chooses
for His mercy whomever He wishes! Glory be to You! There is

Yā man lam yattakhidh ṣāḥibatan walā waladan, yā man jaʿala likula shayʾin qadran, yā man lā yushrik fī ḥukmihi aḥadan, yā man jaʿala al-malāʾikati rusulan, yā man jaʿala fī as-samaʾāʾi burūjan, yā man jaʿala al-ārḍa qarāran, yā man khalaqa mina al-maʾāʾi basharan, yā man jaʿala likulli shayʾin āmadan, yā man aḥāṭa bikulli shayʾin ʿilmā, yā man akhṣā kulla shayʾin ʿadadan.
(84) O He Who has neither wife nor child, O He Who creates
everything in a fixed measure, O He Who has no partner in
His rule, O He Who appointed angels as messengers, O He
Who made constellations in the heavens, O He Who made
the earth a place of abode, O He Who created man from
water, O He Who fixed a period for everything, O He Whose
knowledge encompasses everything, O He Who knows the
number and quantity of everything! Glory be to You! There is

striven for, O Most liberal giver Who is requested, O Noblest

spite of His Grandeur, O He Who is Great in His Wisdom, 0
He Who is Eternal in his Benevolence, O He Who is Aware of

Him from listening to others simultaneously, O He-the doing
one thing does not prevent Him from doing other things
simultaneously, O He-the speech of one person does not
make Him needless of the simultaneous speech of others, 0
He-one request does not make Him forgetful of other
requests, O He-the sight of one thing does not prevent him
from seeing other things simultaneously, O He-the plaintive
cries of those who weep and lament do not bother Him, O He
Who is the ultimate Aim of the efforts of the saints, O He
Who is the Goal of Gnostics, O He Who is the Goal of His
seekers, O He from Whom not a single particle in the worlds
