Dua at Bedtime & Waking Up — Full Arabic Text, Translation & Transliteration

First: Imam al-Sadiq ('a) is reported to have said: Whoever repeats the following doxology (zikr) three times before going to bed, will be released of his sins as exactly as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him:

Kwanza: Imepokewa kutoka kwa Imam al-Sadiq ('a) akisema: Yeyote anayerudia dhikri ifuatayo mara tatu kabla ya kulala, atasamehewa madhambi yake yote na kuwa msafi kabisa kama siku aliyozaliwa na mama yake:

All praise be to Allah Who has exalted, thus dominated.

Sifa zote njema ni za Mwenyezi Mungu Aliyetukuka, na hivyo akatawala.

All praise be to Allah Who has been immanent, thus known all things.

Sifa zote njema ni za Mwenyezi Mungu Aliye wa Ndani kabisa (mwenye kujua siri), na hivyo akajua kila kitu.

All praise be to Allah Who has owned all things, thus had power over them all.

Sifa zote njema ni za Mwenyezi Mungu Anayemiliki kila kitu, na hivyo ana uwezo juu ya vyote.

All praise be to Allah Who gives life to the dead,

Sifa zote njema ni za Mwenyezi Mungu Ambaye hufufua wafu,

causes the living to die,

husababisha walio hai kufa,

and He has power over all things.

Shaykh al-Saduq has also reported the same tradition. The author of Uddat al-Da'i has added that Imam al-Sadiq ('a), having declared this saying, commented, 'This is the least praise one may say to the Lord.' However, according to this narration, the third phrase replaces the second.

Shaykh al-Saduq pia amepokea mapokezi hayo hayo. Second: Imam al-Sadiq ('a) has mentioned that whenever the Holy Prophet (s) went to sleep, he would recite Ayah al-Kursi and then say the following statement:

Pili: Imam al-Sadiq ('a) ametaja kuwa kila mara Mtume Mtukufu (s) alipokuwa akienda kulala, alisoma Ayah al-Kursi na kisha kusema kauli ifuatayo:

In the Name of Allah.

Kwa jina la Mwenyezi Mungu.

I believe in Allah

Namwamini Mwenyezi Mungu

and disavow the false deity.

na namkataa twaghuti (mungu wa uongo).

O Allah, (please) safeguard me in my sleep and in my waking.

Ee Mwenyezi Mungu, nilinde katika usingizi wangu na katika kuamka kwangu.

Third: Al-Mufazzal ibn 'Umar reported the following: Imam al-Sadiq ('a) said to me: If possible, you should not go to bed at night before you pray for the protection of the following eleven items. However, you can use them whenever you wish:

Tatu: Al-Mufazzal ibn 'Umar aliripoti yafuatayo: Imam al-Sadiq ('a) aliniambia: Ikiwezekana, usiende kulala usiku kabla ya kuomba ulinzi kwa mambo kumi na moja yafuatayo. Hata hivyo, unaweza kuyatumia wakati wowote upendao:

I pray the protection of Allah's almightiness,

Najikinga kwa utukufu wa Mwenyezi Mungu,

I pray the protection of Allah's omnipotence,

Najikinga kwa uwezo wa Mwenyezi Mungu,

I pray the protection of Allah's majesty,

Najikinga kwa adhama ya Mwenyezi Mungu,

I pray the protection of Allah's authority,

Najikinga kwa mamlaka ya Mwenyezi Mungu,

I pray the protection of Allah's beauty,

Najikinga kwa uzuri wa Mwenyezi Mungu,

I pray the protection of Allah's defense,

Najikinga kwa kinga ya Mwenyezi Mungu,

I pray the protection of Allah's guard,

Najikinga kwa hifadhi ya Mwenyezi Mungu,

I pray the protection of Allah's wholeness,

Najikinga kwa ukusanyaji (umoja) wa Mwenyezi Mungu,

I pray the protection of Allah's control,

Najikinga kwa ufalme wa Mwenyezi Mungu,

I pray the protection of Allah's face,

Najikinga kwa Wajihi wa Mwenyezi Mungu,

and I pray the protection of Allah's Messenger,

na najikinga kwa Mtume wa Mwenyezi Mungu,

may Allah bless him and his Household,

rehema za Mwenyezi Mungu ziwe juu yake na tanzu zake,

against the evil of whatever He has created, originated, and made.

kutokana na shari ya kila Alichokiumba, Alichokianzisha na Alichokitawanya.

Fourth: Imam al-Sadiq ('a) is reported to have said, 'Whoever repeats Surah al-Tawhid (No. 112) one hundred times before he goes to sleep, Almighty Allah will forgive him the sins of fifty years.' Imam al-Sadiq ('a) is also reported to have said, 'Whoever recites Surah al-Kafirun (No. 109) and Surah al-Tawhid before he goes to sleep etc.'

Nne: Imepokewa kutoka kwa Imam al-Sadiq ('a) akisema, 'Yeyote anayerudia Surah al-Tawhid (Na. 112) mara mia moja kabla ya kulala, Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu atamsamehe madhambi ya miaka hamsini.' Imam al-Sadiq ('a) pia amepokewa akisema, 'Yeyote anayesoma Surah al-Kafirun (Na. 109) na Surah al-Tawhid kabla ya kulala n.k.'

Fifth: Imam al-Sadiq ('a) reported the Holy Prophet (s) as saying: Whoever intends to offer any amount of night worship, may say the following words before he goes to sleep. If he does, Almighty Allah will order an angel to awaken him at the very time he intends to wake up:

Tano: Imam al-Sadiq ('a) amepokea kutoka kwa Mtume Mtukufu (s) akisema: Yeyote anayenuia kufanya ibada yoyote ya usiku, anaweza kusema maneno yafuatayo kabla ya kulala. Akifanya hivyo, Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu ataamuru malaika amwamshe wakati uleule anaonuia kuamka:

O Allah, (please) do not make me feel secure against Your plans,

Ee Mwenyezi Mungu, usinifanye nijione salama dhidi ya adhabu Yako (mipango Yako),

do not make me forget remembrance of You,

wala usinifanye nisahau kukukumbuka Wewe,

and do not include me with the inattentive ones.

na usiniweke miongoni mwa walioghafilika.

I may wake up at...

Nitaamka saa kadhaa na kadhaa... (taja saa unayotaka kuamka)

Sixth: Imam al-Sadiq ('a) is reported to have said: When one of you wakes up at night, he may say the following doxology (zikr). If he does, Almighty Allah will say, 'My servant has said the truth and has thanked Me.'

Sita: Imepokewa kutoka kwa Imam al-Sadiq ('a) akisema: Mmoja wenu anapoamka usiku, anaweza kusema dhikri ifuatayo. Akifanya hivyo, Mwenyezi Mungu Mtukufu atasema, 'Mtumishi wangu amesema kweli na amenishukuru.'

All glory be to Allah the Lord of the prophets,

Utukufu ni wa Mwenyezi Mungu, Mola wa Mitume,

the God of the messengers,

Mungu wa Mitume (Wajumbe),

and the Lord of the enfeebled ones.

na Mola wa wale waliodhoofishwa.

All praise be to Allah Who gives life to the dead

Sifa zote njema ni za Mwenyezi Mungu Ambaye hufufua wafu,

and He has power over all things.

naye ana uwezo juu ya kila kitu.

Seventh: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj has reported that Imam al-Sadiq ('a), whenever he woke up at the last hours of night, would raise his voice with this supplicatory prayer so that the people of his house would hear him:

Saba: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj amepokea kwamba Imam al-Sadiq ('a), kila alipoamka katika saa za mwisho za usiku, alikuwa akipaza sauti yake kwa dua hii ili watu wa nyumbani kwake wamsikie:

O Allah, help me stand the horror of the after-death scene,

Ee Mwenyezi Mungu, nisaidie kukabiliana na hofu ya hali ya baada ya kifo,

expand for me the narrow abode,

nipanulie makazi membamba ya kaburi,

provide me with the welfare of what is before death,

niruzuku heri ya yale yaliyo kabla ya kifo,

and provide me with the welfare of what is after death.

na niruzuku heri ya yale yaliyo baada ya kifo.
