THE 1ST DAY OF RAMADHAN The rites of the first day of Ramadan are as follows:

First: It is recommended to bathe oneself in flowing water and to pour on the head thirty handfuls of water, for such a deed brings about security against all pains and ailments up to the next year.

Second: It is recommended to wash one's face with a handful of rose water so as to be saved against humiliation and poverty, and to pour some of it on the head so as to be saved from pleurisy.

Third: It is recommended to offer the prayer of the first of the month that consists of two units and to give alms after that.

Fourth: It is recommended to offer a two-unit prayer at the first of which Surah al-Faatehah and Surah al-Fath (No. 48) should be recited and at the second, Surah al-Faatehah and any other Surah. If one offers this prayer, Almighty Allah will

save him from all evils and will keep him under His custody up to the next year.

Fifth: When the dawn (fajr) breaks forth, it is recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer:

اَللَّهُمَّ قَدْ حَضَرَ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ،

Oh God, the month of Ramadan has arrived,

وَقَدِ افْتَرَضْتَ عَلَيْنَا صِيَامَهُ،

You have made it obligatory for us to fast on it.

وَاَنْزَلْتَ فِيْهِ الْقُرَانَ

And You revealed the Qur’an therein

هُدَّى لِلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِنَ الْهُدْى وَالْفُرْقَانِ،

A guidance for mankind and clear proofs of guidance and the Criterion,

اَللَّهُمَّ آَعِنَّا عَلَى صِيَامِهِ،

Oh God, help us to fast,

وَتَقَبَّلْهُ مِنَّا

And accept it from us

وَتَسَلَّمْهُ مِنَّا

And he received it from us

وَسَلَّمْهُ لَنَا في يُسْرٍ مِنَكَ وَعَافِيَةٍ

And delivered it to us with ease and good health from you.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلّ شَيْءِ قَدِيْرٌ.

Indeed, You have power over all things.

Sixth: If one has not had the opportunity to say it at night, it is

recommended to say the supplication No. 44 of al-Sahifah al-

Kamilah al-Sajjadiyyah, which has been previously cited.

Seventh: In his book of Zad al-Ma'ad, 'Allamah al-Majlisi has

mentioned that al-Kulayni, al-Tusi, and others, through an

Instructions

authentic chain of authority, have reported Imam Musa al-

Instructions

Kazim (a.s.) as saying, "Say the following supplicatory prayer

Instructions

in the month of Ramadan (on the first day of it, as is

Instructions

understood by scholars), for whoever prays Almighty Allah

Instructions

with this supplicatory prayer purely and without associating

Instructions

any false purposes or showing off, will be saved throughout

Instructions

that year from all seditious and misleading matters as well

Instructions

as all afflictions that may injure his religion or his body. In

Instructions

addition, Almighty Allah will save him from the evils of all the

Instructions

misfortunes that will take place that year." The supplicatory

Instructions

prayer is as follows:

اَللّهُمّ إِنَّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِإسْمِكَ الَّذِي دَانَ لَهُ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ،

Oh God, I ask you in your name to which all things are condemned,

وَبِرَحْمَتِكَ الَتِيْ وَسِعَتْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ،

And by Your mercy that encompasses all things,

وَبِعَظَمَتِكَ الَّتِي تَوَاضَعَ لَهَا كُلِّ شَيْءٍ،

And by your greatness, by which all things are humbled,

وَبِعِزَّتِكَ الَّتِي قَهَرَثْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ،

And by Your might that conquers all things,

وَبِقُوَتِكَ الَّتِي خَضَعَ لَهَا كُلِّ شَيْءٍ،

And by your power by which all things were subjected,

وَبِجَبَرُوْتِكَ الَّتِي غَلَبَثْ كُلَّ شَنءٍ،

And by Your might that has overcome all things,

وَبِعِلْمِكَ الَّذِيْ اَحَاطَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ،

And by Your knowledge that encompasses all things,

يَا نُوْرُ يَا قُدُّوْسُ،

O Light, O Holy One,

يَا اَوَّلَ قَبْلَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ،

O First before all things,

وَيَا بَاقِيًا بَعدَ كُلَ شَيْءٍ،

O one who remains after all things,

يَا اَللهُ يَا رَحْمٰنُ،

I ask you, O Lord, for comfort and joy

صَلَّ عَلى مُحَمَّدٍ وَألِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

Blessings be upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذَّنُوْبَ الَّتِيْ تُغَيِّرُ النَّعَمَ،

And forgive me the sins that change blessings,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَتِيْ تُنْزِلُ النَّقَمَ،

And forgive me the sins that bring vengeance on me,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَتِيْ تَقْطَعُ الرَّجَاءَ،

And forgive me the sins that sever hope,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ لذَّنُوبَ الَتِيِ تُدِيْلَ الْاَعْدَآءَ،

And forgive me for the sins that deceive my enemies,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِى تَرُدُ الدُّعَاءَ،

And forgive me the sins that reject supplication,

وَاغْفِزْ لِيَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِيْ يُسْتَحَقُّ بِهَا نُزُوْلُ الْبَلَاءِ

And forgive me the sins that deserve calamity.

وَاغْفِزْ لِيَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِيْ تَخبِسُ غَيْثَ السَّمَاءِ،

And forgive me the sins that withhold the rain of heaven,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَّتِيْ تَكْشِفُ الْغِطَاءَ،

And forgive me the sins that reveal the cover,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوْبَ الَتِيْ تُعَجَلُ الْفَنَاءَ،

And forgive me the sins that hasten my annihilation.

وَاغْفِزْ لِيَ الذَّنُوْبَ الَّتِيْ تُوْرِتُ النَّدَمَ،

And forgive me the sins that cause remorse,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذَّنُوْبَ الَّتِيْ تَهِتِكُ الْعِصَمَ،

And forgive me the sins that violate my integrity,

وَالْبِسْنِي دِرْعَكَ الْحَصِيْنَةَ الَّتِي لَا ثُرَامُ،

And clothe me with your strong armor that does not fail,

وَعَافِنِي مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أُحَاذِرُ بِاللَّيلِ وَالنَّهَارِ فِي مُسْتَقْبِلِ سَنَتِيْ هَذِهِ،

And protect me from the evil of what I fear day and night in the coming of this year of mine.

اَللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ،

Oh God, Lord of the seven heavens,

وَرَبَّ الْاَرَضِيْنَ السَّبْعِ وَمَا فِيْهِنَّ وَما بَيْنَهُنَّ،

And Lord of the seven earths and what is in them and what is between them,

وَرَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيْمِ،

And Lord of the Great Throne,

وَرَبَّ السَّبْعِ الْمَثَانِي، وَالْقُرْأْنِ الْعَظِيْمِ،

And the Lord of the Seven Repeated Words, and the Great Qur’an,

وَرَبَّ اِسْرَافِيْلَ وَمِيْكَائِيْلَ وَجَبْرَآئِيْلَ،

And the Lord of Israfil, Michael, and Gabriel,

وَرَبَّ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَالِهِ سَيِّدِ الْمُرْسَلِيْنَ وَخَاتَمِ النَّبِيّيْنَ،

By the Lord of Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, the Master of Messengers and the Seal of the Prophets,

أَسْاَلَكَ بِكَ وَبِمَا سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ

I ask you by you and by what you have named yourself.

يَا عَظِيمُ أَنْتَ الَّذِيْ تَمُنَّ بِالْعَظِيمِ،

O great one, you are the one who has done great things.

وَتَدْفَعُ كُلِّ مَخذُوْرٍ،

And you repel every sin,

وَتُغْطِي كُلَّ جَزِيْل،

And it covers all greatness,

وَتُضَاعِفُ الْحَسَنَاتِ بِالْقَلِيلِ وَبِالْكَثِيْرِ،

And good deeds are multiplied by little and by many.

وَتَفْعَلُ مَا تَشَآءُ

And you do whatever you want

يَا قَدِيْرٌ يَا اَللهُ يَا رَخْمْنُ،

O Almighty, O God, O Rakhman,

صَلَّ عَلى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاَهلِ بَيْتِهِ،

Blessings be upon Muhammad and his family,

وَالْبِسْنِي فِي مُسْتَقْبَلِ سَنَتِيْ هذِهِ سِشرَكَ،

And clothe me in the future of this year of yours,

وَنَضَّرْ وَجْهِيْ بِنُوْرِكَ،

And make my face shine with your light,

وَاَحِبَنِيْ بِمَحَبَّتِكَ،

And love me with your love,

وَبَلَغْنِي رِضْوَانَكَ،

And Your satisfaction has reached me,

وَشَرِيْفَ كَرَامَتِكَ،

And honorable your dignity,

وَجَسِيْمَ عَطِيَّتِكَ،

And the greatness of your gift,

وَاَغْطِنِيْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ مَا عِنْدَكَ

And cover me with the good that you have

وَمِنْ خَيْرٍ مَا أَنْتَ مُغْطِيْهِ آَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ،

And of the best that You cover for anyone of Your creation,

وَالْبِسْنِي مَعَ ذَلِكَ عَافِيَتَكَ

And clothe me with that, your well-being

يَا مَوْضِعَ كُلَّ شَكْوْى،

O place of every complaint,

وَيَا شَاهِدَ كُلَّ نَجْوْى،

O witness of every conversation,

وَيَا عَالِمَ كُلَ خَفِيَّةٍ،

O Knower of all hidden things,

وَيَا دَافِعَ مَا تَشَاءُ مِنْ بَلِيَّةٍ،

And you who remove whatever calamity you wish,

يَا كَرِيْمَ العَفْوِ،

O Most Merciful of Pardoners,

يَا حَسَنَ التَّجَاوُزِ،

O beautiful transcendence,

تَوَفَّنِي عَلَى مِلَّةِ اِبْرَاهِيْمَ وَفِطرَتِهِ،

Cause me to die following the religion of Abraham and his nature.

وَعَلْى دِيْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَألِهِ وَسُنَّتِهِ،

And upon the religion and Sunnah of Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family,

وَعَلَى خَيْرِ الْوَفَاةِ، فَتَوَفَنِي مُوَالِيًا لاوْلِيَائِكَ،

And for the best of deaths, let me die loyal to your friends.

وَمُعَادِيًا لِاَعْدَآئِكَ،

And hostile to your enemies,

اَللَهُمَّ وَجَنَّبْنِي فِيْ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ

Oh God, spare me this year.

كُلِّ عَمَلٍ اَوْ قَوْلٍ اَوْ فِعْلٍ يُبَاعِدُنِيْ مِنْكَ،

Every action, word or deed distances me from you.

وَاَجْلِبْنِي إِلَى كُلَّ عَمَلٍ أَوْ قَوْلٍ اَوْ فِعْلٍ

And bring me to every action, word or deed.

يُقَرِّبُنِيْ مِنْكَ فِيْ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ

It brings me closer to you this year

يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ،

O Most Merciful of the merciful,

وَامْتَعْنِي مِنْ كُلِّ عَمَلٍ اَوْ قَوْلٍ آَوْ فِعْلِ

And please me from every deed, word or deed.

يَكُوْنُ مِنِّي آَخَافُ ضَرَرَ عَاقِبَتِهِ،

I fear the harm of its consequences,

وَاَخَافُ مَقْتَكَ اِيَّايَ عَلَيْهِ

And I fear that you will hate me for it

جِذَارَ اَنْ تَضْرِفَ وَجْهَكَ الْكَرِيْمَ عَنَّيْ

It is permissible for you to turn your honorable face away from me.

فَاسْتَوْجِبَ بِهِ نَقْصًا مِنْ حَظَّ لِيْ عِنْدَكَ

So take for it a deficiency in my share with you.

يَا رَؤُوْفُ يَا رَحِيْمُ،

O Compassionate, O Merciful,

اَللَّهُمّ اجْعَلْنِي فِيْ مُسْتَقْبَلِ سَنَتِي هَذِهِ فِي جِفْظِكَ

Oh God, keep me in your protection in the future of this year of mine.

وَفِيْ جِوَارِكَ وَفِيْ كَنَفِكَ،

And next to you and under your care,

وَجَلَّلْنِي سِثْرَ عَافِيَتِكَ،

I am humbled by your happiness,

وَهَبْ لِيْ كَرَامَتَكَ،

Grant me your dignity,

عَزَّ جَارُكَ

Strong is one who is in Your vicinity,

وَجَلَّ ثَنَاؤُكَ

Your praise is great

وَلَا اِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ،

There is no god but you,

اَللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي تَابِعًا لِصَالِحِي مَنْ مَضى مِنْ اوْليَآئِكَ،

Oh God, make me follow the righteousness of those who passed away from among your friends.

وَاَلْحِقْنِيْ بِهِمْ

And join me with them

وَاجْعَلْنِي مُسْلِمًا لِمَنْ قَالَ بِالصِّدْقِ عَلَيْكَ مِنْهُمْ،

And make me a Muslim for those of them who say the truth about you.

وَاَعْوَذُ بِكَ اَللَّهِمَّ آنْ تُجِيْطَ بِن خَطِيْئَتِنْ وَظُلْمِي

I seek refuge in You, O God, from my sins and my injustice.

وَاِسْرَافِي عَلَى نَفْسِي، وَاتَّبَاعِي لِهَوَايَ،

And I was extravagant with myself, and I followed my desires,

وَاشتِغَالِي بِشَهَوَاتِيْ،

And preoccupied with my desires,

فَيَحُوْلُ ذَلِكَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَرِضْوَانِكَ

This will come between me and your mercy and pleasure.

فَاكُوْنُ مَنْسِيًّا عِنْدَكَ،

I will be forgotten by you,

مُتَعَرِّضًا لِسَخَطِكَ وَنِقْمَتِكَ،

Exposed to your wrath and vengeance,

اَللَّهُمّ وَفَّقْنِي لِكُلَّ عَمَلٍ صَالِحِ تَرْضى بِهِ عَنِّي،

Oh God, grant me success in every good deed that pleases me.

وَقَرِّبْنِي اِلَيْكَ زُلفِى،

And bring me closer to you,

اَللّهُمّ كَمَا كَفَيْتَ نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَألهِ هَوْلَ عَدُوِّهٍ،

Oh God, as You sufficed Your Prophet Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, from the terror of his enemy.

وَفَرَّجْتَ هَمَّهُ،

And you relieved his worry,

وَكَشَفْتَ غَمَّهُ،

And his grief was revealed,

وَصَدَقْتَهُ وَعْدَكَ،

And you kept his promise,

وَاَنْجَزْتَ لَهُ عَهْدَكَ،

And you fulfilled your covenant with him,

اَللّهُمَّ فَبِذْلِكَ فَاكْفِنِي هَوْلَ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ

Oh God, suffice me with this this year.

وَافَاتِهَا وَاسْقَامَهَا

Her death and illness

وَفِثْنَتَهَا وَشُرُوْرَهَا

And its idolatry and evil

وَاَخْزَانَهَا وَضِيْقَ الْمَعَاشِ فِيْهَا،

And its contempt and the hardship of livelihood therein,

وَبَلَّغْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ كَمَالَ الْعَافِيَةِ

And grant me, by Your mercy, perfect health.

بِتَمَامِ دَوَامِ النَّعْمَةِ عِنْدِيْ إِلَى مُنْتَهى اَجَلِيْ،

By the complete permanence of grace with me until the end of my life,

آَساَلَكَ سُؤَالَ مَنْ اَسَآءَ وَظَلَمَ وَاسْتَكَانَ وَاعْتَرَفَ،

I ask you the question of someone who did wrong and was unjust and kept quiet and confessed.

وَاَسْاَلُكَ اَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي مَا مَضى مِنَ الذُّنُوْبِ

I ask you to forgive me for my past sins.

الَّتِي حَصْرَتَهَا حَفَظَتُكَ

What you have kept, I have kept

وَاَخصَثْهَا كِرَامُ مَلَائِكَتِكَ عَلَيَّ،

And make it fertilized by the generosity of Your angels upon me,

وَآَنْ تَعْصِمَنِنْ اِلَهِيْ مِنَ الذُّنُوْبِ

And to protect me from sins, my God.

فِيْمَا بَقِيَ مِنْ عُمْرِيْ إِلَى مُنْتَهى اَجَلِي،

For the remainder of my life until the end of my life,

يَا اَللهُ يَا رَحْمٰنُ يَا رَحِيْمُ،

O God, O Compassionate, O Merciful,

صَلَّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاَهْلِ بَيْتِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

Blessings be upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,

وَاتِنِي كُلَّ مَا سَالْتُكَ وَرَغِبْتُ اِلَيْكَ فِيْهِ،

And give me everything I asked of you and desired of you,

فَاِنَّكَ اَمَرْتَنِيْ بِالدُّعَاءِ

You commanded me to pray

وَتَكَفَّلْتَ لِيْ بِالْإِجَابَةِ

You provided me with the answer

يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ.

O Most Merciful of those who are merciful.
