First Night Of Ramadhan — Rites, Supplications & Translation

FIRST NIGHT OF RAMADHAN The rites of the first night of Ramadan are as follows:

First: Watching the New Moon (Istihlal): It is highly recommended to watch the new moon of Ramadan at the first night of it. Moreover, some scholars have decided this act as obligatory.

Second: When your eyes fall on the new moon, you must not point to it, rather, you should turn yourself towards the kiblah direction, raise both your hands towards the sky, and address the new moon with the following words:

رَبِّي وَرَبُّكَ اللهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ،

My Lord and your Lord, God is the Lord of the worlds,

اَللَّهُمَّ آَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْامْنِ وَالْاِيْمَانِ،

Oh God, grant us peace and faith.

وَالسَّلَامَةِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ،

And safety and Islam,

وَالْمُسَارَعَةِ اِلَى مَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضى،

And hastening to what you love and are satisfied with,

اَللَهُمَّ بَارِك لَنَا فِيْ شَهْرِنَا هَذَا،

Oh God, bless us in this month of ours.

وَاززُقْنَا خَيْرَهُ وَعَوْنَهُ،

And bestow upon us his goodness and assistance,

وَاضْرِفْ عَنَّا ضُرَّهُ وَشَرَّهُ وَبَلَاءَهُ وَفِثْنَتَهُ.

And turn away from us its harm, its evil, its calamity, and its disgrace.

It has been narrated that when the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)

would see the new moon of Ramadan, he would turn his face

to the kiblah direction and say the following:

اَللَّهُمَّ اَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْأمْنِ وَالْاِيْمَانِ،

Oh God, grant us his family with security and faith.

وَالسَّلَامَةِ وَالْاِسْلَامِ،

And safety and peace,

وَالْعَافِيَةِ الْمُجَلَّلَةِ وَدِفَاعِ الْاسْقَامِ،

And great wellness and protection from diseases,

وَالْعَوْنِ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ وَالصِّيَامِ وَالْقِيَامِ

And help in prayer, fasting and standing.

وَتِلَاوَةِ الْقُرَانِ،

and recitation of the Qur’an,

اَللَّهُمَّ سَلَّمْنَا لِشَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ

Oh God, grant us peace in the month of Ramadan

وَتَسَلَّمْهُ مِنَّا،

And he received it from us,

وَسَلَّمْنَا فِيْهِ

And we were blessed in it

حَثَّى يَنْقَضِيَ عَنَا شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ

Until the month of Ramadan ends for us

وَقَدْ عَفَوْتَ عَنَّا وَغَفَرْتَ لَنَا وَرَجِمْتَنَا.

You have pardoned us, forgiven us, and stoned us.

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq(a.s.) is also reported to have said:

When you see the new moon of Ramadan, you may say the

اَللَّهُمَّ قَدْ حَضَرَ شَهرُ رَمَضَانَ،

Oh God, the month of Ramadan has arrived,

وَقَدِ افْتَرَضْتَ عَلَيْنَا صِيَامَهُ،

You have made it obligatory for us to fast on it.

وَاَنْزَلْتَ فِيْهِ الْقُرَانَ

And You revealed the Qur’an therein

هُدَّى لِلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِنَ الْهُدْى وَالْغُرْقَانِ،

A guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and sunken,

اَللَّهُمَّ اعِنَّا عَلَى صيامِهِ

Oh God, help us to fast

وَتَقَبَّلْهُ مِنَّا،

And accept it from us,

وَسَلَّمْنَا فِيْهِ،

And we greeted therein,

وَسَلَّمْنَا مِنْهُ

And we were delivered from him

وَسَلَّمْهُ لَنَا فِيْ يُسْرٍ مِنَكَ وَعَافِيَة

A crescent that is safe from the times,

اِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ،

You are powerful over all things,

يَا رَحْمْنُ يَا رَحِيْمُ.

O Most Merciful, O Most Merciful.
