AAMAL OF THE LAST TEN NIGHTS OF RAMADHAN Starting with this night, it is recommended to say the supplicatory prayers that are dedicated to the last ten nights of Ramadan.

Instructions

(1) In al-Kafi, Shaykh al-Kulayni has reported Imam Ja'far al Sadiq(a.s.) as saying: At the last ten nights of Ramadan, you may say the following supplicatory prayer:

اَعُوْذُ بِجَلَالِ وَجْهِكَ الْكَرِيْمِ

I seek refuge in the majesty of your honorable face

اَنْ يَنْقَضِيَ عَنَّي شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ

That the month of Ramadan ends for me

آَوْ يَظلَعَ الْفَجْرُ مِنْ لَيْلَتِيْ هَذِهِ

Oh, the dawn will come this night

وَلَكَ قِبَلِي ذَنْبٌ آَوْ تَبِعَةٌ تُعَذَّبُنِيْ عَلَيْهِ.

And you have before me a sin or a consequence for which you will punish me.

(2) As a footnote in al-Balad al-Amin, al-Kaf'ami has

mentioned that lmam Ja'far al-Sadiq(a.s.) used say the

Instructions

following supplicatory prayer at each of the last ten night of

Instructions

Ramadan after the obligatory and supererogatory (mustahab

Instructions

/ nafilah) prayers:

اَللّهُمّ آَدّ عَنَّا حَقَّ مَا مَضى مِنْ شَهْرٍ رَمَضَانَ

Oh God, grant us the rights of the past month of Ramadan.

وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا تَقْصِيْرَنَا فِيْهِ،

And forgive us our shortcomings in it,

وَتَسَلَّمْهُ مِنَّا مَقْبُؤْلًا،

Glory be to God, the Creator of what is seen and what is unseen

وَلا تُؤَاخِذْنَا بِاِسْرَافِنَا عَلى اَنْفُسِنَا،

And do not call us to account for our extravagance against ourselves.

وَاجْعَلَنَا مِنَ الْمَرْحُوْمِيْنَ

And make us among the deceased

وَلَا تَجْعَلْنَا مِنَ المَحْرُوْمِيْنَ.

And do not make us among the deprived.

Instructions

He adds that Almighty Allah will forgive one who says this

supplicatory prayer all the sins that he has committed in the

Instructions

past days of Ramadan and will protect him against sinning in

Instructions

the rest of it.

(3) In lqbal al-A'mal, Sayyid Ibn Tawus has narrated on the

Instructions

authority of lbn Abi-'Umayr on the authority of Murazim that

Instructions

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq(a.s.) used to say the following

Instructions

supplicatory prayer at each of the last ten nights of Ramadan:

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ قُلْتَ فِيْ كِتَابِكَ الْمُنْزَلِ

Oh God, you said in your revealed book

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِيْ أُنْزِلَ فِيْهِ الْقُرْأنُ

The month of Ramadan in which the Qur’an was revealed

هُدَّى لِلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِنَ الْهُدْى وَالْفُرْقَانِ

A guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and the Criterion.

فَعَظَمْتَ حُرْمَةَ شَهْرٍ رَمَضَانَ

So you magnified the sanctity of the month of Ramadan

بِمَا اَنْزَلْتَ فِيْهِ مِنَ الْقُرْاْنِ،

Because of the Qur’an you revealed therein,

وَخَصَصْتَهُ بِلَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ

And designated it as the Night of Decree

وَجَعَلْتَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْ اَلْفِ شَهْرٍ،

And You made it better than a thousand months,

اَللَّهُمَّ وَهَذِهِ آَيَّامُ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ قَدِ انْقَضَتْ،

Oh God, and these days of the month of Ramadan have passed,

وَلَيَالِيْهِ قَدْ تَصَرَّمَتْ،

And his nights were dark,

وَقَدْ صِرْتُ يَا اِلَهِيْ مِنْهُ إِلَى مَا أَنْتَ آَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنَّي

And I have become, O my God, from him to what you know better than me.

وَاَخصى لِعَدَدِهِ مِنَ الْخَلْقِ اَجْمَعِيْنَ،

And He was singled out for His number from all of creation.

فَاَساَلَكَ بِمَا سَاَلَكَ بِهِ مَلَآئِكَتُكَ الْمُقَرَّبُوْنَ

So I ask you for what your close angels asked you for.

وَاَنْبِيَاؤُكَ الْمُرْسَلُوْنَ،

And your messenged prophets,

وَعِبَادُكَ الضَّالِحُوْنَ،

And your misguided servants,

آَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَالِ مُحَمَّدٍ

To send blessings upon Muhammad and his family

وَآَنْ تَفْكَ رَقْبَتِيْ مِنَ النَارِ،

And to free my neck from the fire,

وَتُدْخِلَنِى الْجَنَّةَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ،

And admit me to Paradise by your mercy,

وَاَنْ تَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيَّ بِعَفْوِكَ وَكَرَمُكَ

And grant me your forgiveness and generosity.

وَ تَتَقَبَّلَ تَقَرُبِيْ

And accept my approach

وَ تَسْتَجِيْبَ دُعَآئِنْ

And prayers are answered

وَتَمُنَّ عَلَيَّ بِالْأَمْنِ يَوْمَ الْخَوْفِ

And wish me security on the day of fear.

مِنْ كُلّ هَوْلِ اَعْدَدْتَهُ لِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ،

From all the terrors You have prepared for the Day of Resurrection,

اِلَهِي وَاَعُوْذُ بِوَجْهِكَ الْكَرِيْمِ،

My God, I seek refuge in Your Noble Face,

وَبِجَلَالِكَ الْعَظِيْمِ

And in your great majesty

آَنْ يَنْقَضِيَ أَيَامُ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَلَيَالِيهِ

When the days and nights of the month of Ramadan end

وَلَكَ قِبَلِيْ تَبِعَةُ أَوْ ذَنْبٌ تُؤَاخِذُنِيْ بِهِ

And before me there is a consequence or a sin for which you hold me accountable.

آَوْ خَطِيْئَةٌ ثُرِيْدُ آَنْ تَقْتَصَّهَا مِنِّنْ لَمْ تَغْفِزْهَا لِنِ

Or a sin that you should not retaliate from someone whom you did not forgive.

سَيِّدِيْ سَيِّدِيْ سَيِّدِيْ

Sir, sir, sir

اَساَلُكَ يَا لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ

I ask you, oh there is no god but you

إِذْ لَا اِلْهَ إِلَّا اَنْتَ

For there is no god but You

اِنْ كُنْتَ رَضَيْتَ عَنِّي فِيْ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ

If you are satisfied with me this month

فَازْدَذْ عَنَّيْ رِضًا،

So be more pleased with me,

وَاِنْ لَمُ تَكُنْ رَضَيْتَ عَنِّي

Even if you are not satisfied with me

فَمِنَ الأَنَ فَارْضَ عَنَّيْ

From now on, he has left me

يَا اَرحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ،

O Most Merciful of the merciful,

يَا اَللهُ يَا آَحَدُ يَا صَمَدْ

O God, O One, O Samad

يَا مَنْ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمُ يُوْلِدْ

O you who do not give birth and are not born

وَلَمُ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوَا اَحَدٌ.

And there was no one equal to him.

Instructions

(4) You may repeat the following supplicatory prayer as many

times as possible during this night:

يَا مُلَيِّنَ الْحَدِيْدِ لِدَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ،

O softener of iron for David, peace be upon him,

يَا كَاشِفَ الضُرِّ وَالْكُرَبِ الْعِظَامِ عَنْ آَيُّوْبَ (عليه السلام)،

O You who remove great harm and distress from Job (peace be upon him),

ايْ مُفَرِّجَ هَمّ يَعْقُوْبَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ،

Which relieves the worries of Jacob, peace be upon him.

آَيْ مُنَفَّسَ غَمِّ يُوْسُفَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ،

That is, a relief for the grief of Joseph, peace be upon him.

صَلَّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَالِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

Blessings be upon Muhammad and his family,

كَمَا اَنْتَ اَهْلُهُ اَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَ،

As you are worthy of praying for them all,

وَافْعَلْ بِيْ مَا أَنْتَ آَهْلُهُ،

And do to me what you are worthy of,

وَلَا تَفْعَلْ بِيْ مَا آَنَا آَهْلَهُ.

And do not do to me what I deserve.

(5) Shaykh al-Kulayni, in al-Kafi, has narrated, with a

complete chain of authority, that the following supplicatory

prayer, which is also narrated in al-Muqni'ah and al-Misbah

Instructions

yet with an interruption in the chain of authority, should be

Instructions

said at the twenty-first night of Ramadan:

يَامُؤْلِجَ اللَّيْلِ فِي النَّهَارِ،

Forgive us our sins,

وَمُؤْلِجَ النَّهَارِ فِي اللّيْلِ،

And the irritation of the day at night,

وَمُخْرِجَ الحَيِّ مِنَ المَيّتِ،

And we worship none but Him

وَمُخْرِجَ المَيِّتِ مِنَ الحَيَّ،

And bringing out the dead from the living,

يَا رَازِقَ مَنْ يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ،

O Provider of whomsoever He wills without reckoning,

يَا اَللهُ يَارَخْمْنُ،

O God, O Arachman,

يَا اللهُ يَا رَحِيْمُ،

O God, O Merciful,

يَااللهُ يَااللهُ يَااللّٰه

Oh God, oh God, oh God

لَكَ الْاَسَّمَاءُ الْحُسْتَى،

You have the most beautiful names,

وَالْاَمْثَالَ الْعُلْيَا،

And the highest examples,

وَالْكِبْرِيَآءُ وَالْألَاءُ،

And pride and honor,

آَسَاَلُكَ اَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَالِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

I ask you to bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

وَآَنْ تَجْعَلَ اسْمِي فِيْ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ فِي السِّعَدَاءِ،

And that you make my name among the happy ones this night,

وَرُوْجِيْ مَعَ الشُّهَدَآءِ،

And be promoted with the martyrs,

وَاِحسَانِي فِي عِلَّيِّيْنَ،

And my kindness in Aliyin,

وَاِسَائَتِيْ مَغْفُوْرَةً،

And my transgressions are forgiven,

وَاَنْ تَهَبَ لِي يَقِيْنًا تُبَاشِرُ بِهِ قَلْبِي،

And if you give me certainty that will bring peace to my heart,

وَاِيْمَانًا يُذْهِبُ الشَّكَّ عَنَّي،

And a faith that removes doubt from me,

وَتُرْضِيَنِيْ بِمَا قَسَمْتَ لِي،

And please me with what you have apportioned for me,

وَاتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً،

And We have given us good in this world,

وَفِي الأَخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً،

And in the Hereafter it is good,

وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ الحَرِيْقِ،

Protect us from the torment of burning fire,

وَاززُقْنِيْ فِيْهَا ذِكْرَكَ وَشُكْرَكَ وَالرَّغْبَةَ اِلَيْكَ،

And bless me with Your remembrance, thanksgiving, and desire for You.

وَالْإِنَابَةَ وَالتَّوْفِيْقَ لِمَا وَفَّقْتَ لَهُ مُحَمَدًا وَآلَ مُحَمَّدٍ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ.

And delegation and success to what You granted Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, peace be upon them.

(6) Al-Kaf'ami has quoted Sayyid Ibn Baqi as saying that it is

recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer at the

Instructions

twenty-first night of Ramadan:

اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلْى مُحَمَّدٍ وَألِ مُحَمَّدٍ

O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad

وَاقْسِمْ لِي حِلْمًا يَسُدُّ عَنَّيْ بَابَ الْجَهْل،

And give me a dream that will close the door of ignorance for me.

وَهُدّى تَمُنُّ بِهِ عَلَيَّ مِنْ كُلِّ ضَلَالَةٍ،

And the guidance bestowed upon me from every misguidance,

وَغِنَّى تَسُدُّ بِهِ عَنَّيْ بَابَ كُلِّ فَقْرٍ

And wealth closes the door of all poverty for me.

وَقُوَةً تَرُدُّ بِهَا عَنَّي كُلّ ضَعْفِ،

And strength that turns away from me every weakness,

وَعِزَّا ثُكْرِمُنِي بِهِ عَنْ كُلِّ ذُلّ،

And honor me with it for all humiliation.

وَرِفْعَةً تَزْفَعْنِيْ بِهَا عَنْ كُلِّ ضَعَةٍ،

And an elevation by which You lift me up from every humiliation,

وَآَمْنَا تَرُدُّ بِهِ عَنَّيْ كُلِّ خَوْفِ،

And I believe in him, and you turn away all fear from me,

وَعَافِيَةً تَسْتُرُنِي بِهَا عَنْ كُلّ بَلَآءٍ،

And well-being that protects me from every affliction.

وَعِلْمَا تَفْتَحُ لِي بِهِ كُلَّ يَقِيْنٍ،

And when you reveal to me the knowledge of it with all certainty,

وَيَقِيْنًا تُذْهِبُ بِهِ عَنِّيْ كُلَّ شَكٍّ،

With the certainty that you remove all doubt from me,

وَدُعَآءً تَبْسُطُ لِي بِهِ الْإِجَابَةَ فِي هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّاعَةِ،

And a supplication that You will make easy for me to answer on this night and at this hour.

السَّاعَةِ السَاعَةِ السَّاعَةِ يَا كَرِيْمُ،

The hour, the hour, the hour, O Generous one,

وَخَوْفًا تَتْشُرُ لِيْ بِهِ كُلِّ رَحمَةٍ،

And out of fear that all mercy will spread to me,

وَعِضْمَةً تَحْوْلُ بِهَا بَيْنِيْ وَبَيْنَ الذَّنُوْبِ

And a burden that keeps me from sins

حَتَّى أُفْلِحَ بِهَا عِنْدَ الْمَغْصُوْمِيْنَ عِنْدَكَ

Until I succeed with it before those who are oppressed by you.

بِرَحمَتِكَ يَآ اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ.

By your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

It has been narrated that Ali ibn Hammad visited lmam Ja'far

al-Sadiq(a.s.) at the twenty-first night of Ramadan. "Have you

bathed yourself, Hammad?" asked the Imam. "Yes, I have,"

Instructions

answered Hammad. The Imam (a.s.) then asked him to

Instructions

stand by him so as to imitate him in offering prayers.

Instructions

Hammad did. When they finished all the prayers, the Imam

Instructions

(a.s.) began to supplicate and Hammad listened and prayed

Instructions

for response. When dawn (fajr) rose, the Imam (a.s.)

Instructions

declared the adhan (call to prayer), uttered the iqamah (the

Instructions

prefatory part of prayers), and then summoned one of his

Instructions

servants to participate in the prayer. They all stood behind

Instructions

the Imam (a.s.) who led their congregational Fajr (dawn

Instructions

(fajr)) Prayer reciting Surah al-Faatehah and Surah al-Qadr in

Instructions

the first unit and Surah al-Faatehah and Surah al-Tawheed in

Instructions

the second. When he finished the post-prayer litanies and

Instructions

doxologies, praising Him, venerating Him, thanking Him,

Instructions

invoking His blessings upon the Holy Prophet and his

Instructions

Household, and praying Him for the good of all the believing

Instructions

men and women as well as all the Muslims, Imam al-

Instructions

Sadiq(a.s.) prostrated himself. The companions could not

Instructions

hear anything except the lmam's breaths for a long time.

Instructions

Hammad narrated: I could then hear him saying the following:

لَا اِلْهَ اِلَّا آَنْتَ مُقَلَّبَ الْقُلُوْبِ وَ الْأَبْصَارِ....

There is no god but You, the converter of hearts and sights....
